i'm new to the community, and also new to having a regular exercise program. i'm really trying to develop something that i can do regularly, in my small apartment. my specific concerns are toning and fat reduction, particularly in the ab and hip areas.
i feel like my best option is to add cardio to my routine, but i don't have access to a gym and due to weather concerns (new england is very cold and icy this time of year!) walking or running outside isn't really an option.
does anyone have any advice on exercises i could do to get my heart rate up, burn calories, and stay indoors?

Perhaps you can try using jump rope, you can do it for atleast 15 minutes daily. I think it's a great cardio workout, it'll make you sweat a lot and burn calories!

Hi and welcome to the community! Do you mind me asking your age and what your ab and hip measurements are? And if you have every done any weight lifting before?

thanks for all the replies!
i'm 22, about 5'3" and 120 lbs. i think my waist is about 29" and my hips are about 36".
jumping rope is a great idea, and i'd love to try cardio dvds - any particular recommendations? i'd been looking at the new york city ballet routine but i was afraid it might be a little intense for a first attempt.

I like to do burpee conditioning and minuite circuits indoors when i cant get to the track, the burpee is an excellent movement which works a large amount of your body and can really get your heart rate up.
With a minuite circuite i might do...
60 seconds skipping
60s push ups
60s chinnies
60s burpees
60s rest
do that 4 or 5 times all exercises done as fast as possible and your cardio system will be working. You might want to change the exercises to suit your level or needs but i find this format works well.
You could throw in anything star jumps, sprinting on the spot, crunches, pull ups, ANYTHING!!! just mix it up and find what works best for you

I think rope jumping is great for burning bodyfat. However, to tone your hips and thighs I recommend you do squats and lunges holding 10 or 15 lb dumbbells for resistance. Keep your reps in the 15 to 20 range.

I'm just curious, will jump ropes help you tone your abs?

Yes, rope jumping will help you tone your abs to a degree because your abs stabilze your body doing this exercise. However, I would additionally do more ab specific exercises if toning your abs is the goal.
Rope jumping is going to help you burn the fat layer around your abs while doing specific ab exercies will be more effective in toning.

Well in this page you'll find workout videos demonstrated by Personal Trainers. Also you could chose whether to do exercises that require equipment or without. Use the search engine to broze through for more...
I guess if you have the equipment at home then you'll have a wide variety of exercises to do with the help of this website:

I hope it helped..

hey waterboy. You're doing the right thing! i never went to the gym when i was young but i made sure i did my share of physical exercise on my own. In my own comfortable time. In my case, i played basketball twice a week. golf once a week. Fruit juices in the morning and lots of tea. i've been feeling great for a long time! thats what i tell my kids too. Stay clean, play sports and drink tea.
