Dealing With A “Wristy” Business

Ever having troubles with your wrists? If you complain about them most of the time, you might just be suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a deficiency in the wrists that occurs when your tendons grow in an abnormal size or somewhat inflamed. Why it is called carpal tunnel syndrome is due to the scientific name of the bone near the palm called carpals, and the narrow tunnel of bones and ligaments located at the wrists, experiencing a feeling of being pinched on the nerves. This can be felt from the fingers and your muscles just below your thumb.

How can you be sure that you are really a victim of carpal tunnel syndrome? This condition can usually be felt during night time. The feeling of burning and numbness in the fingers are also present. It has a semi-paralyzing effect on the hands as it provides difficulty to grip things.

If you are sure that you are experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome, don’t panic. There are some exercises that you can perform to somehow relieve yourself of this “wristy” business. Follow this exercise to maintain your wrist’s flexibility:

STEP 1: You can stand up straight or sit in proper posture, meaning not having a curve on your back or neck. Raise your arms forward together with your wrists and elbows extended straight.

STEP 2: Now slowly pull your wrists backwards by bending them on a 90 degrees position, keeping your fingers still and straight. Hold that position for around five (5) seconds and return your wrists to its starting position. Do this on the opposite side, meaning bending it forward.

STEP 3: Do the same thing on STEP 2 but this time, instead of having your fingers straight, make a fist and do the same routine.

STEP 4: You can also try this next exercise which is making a hand gesture as if you are pointing to someone using your index finger. With all your other fingers clasped, make imaginary circles allowing your wrists to do a circular motion. Do this routine for 10 seconds clockwise then another ten seconds on the opposite.

If your wrists are too painful to perform these exercises, it would be best to seek medical attention instead.
