South Beach Diet More and more people nowadays are looking for the most effective way to lose weight or to keep fit. With different types of diets out there, how will you determine which diet is suitable for you?

South Beach Diet has attracted a lot of people because it simply works. This diet was introduced by Dr. Arthur Agatston in Miami for his cardiac patients whom he based upon his scientific dieting research. South Beach Diet focuses on the consumption of “good carbs” and “good fats”. Decreasing the intake of bad carbohydrates will help you metabolize what you eat more effectively. Eating foods with bad carbs and fats can cause you to eat more, resulting to weight gain.

You will be changing the way you eat and the variety of foods that you take. The key is to eat the right food that is rich in good carbs and fats. How can we distinguish good carbs and good fats? Foods with good carbs are those high in fiber or high in good fats while foods rich in good fats are those with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. The South Beach Diet emphasizes the intake of good fats and carbs which will help you lose weight and at the same time be healthy. Once you’ve maintained the weight goal you desire, having this diet will then become a lifestyle that you can follow for as long as you live.

The South Beach Diet comes in three phases:

Phase I
The first phase lasts for two weeks. This is where all carbohydrates will be restricted. Meals will usually include meat, fish, vegetables, eggs, cheese, and nuts. It is said that during this phase, your body will lose its insulin resistance and begin to use excess body fat, causing you to lose 8 - 13 pounds.

Phase II
Previously banned foods will be reintroduced in Phase II. These include small amounts of whole grains, fruits, and dairy products. There is still importance in eating foods with a low glycemic index. Weight loss can be from 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Phase III
The third phase will be the diet that is designed for maintenance. Once you’ve reached your weight goal, you proceed to this phase to maintain it. Phase III includes three servings of whole grains and three servings of fruit a day. You will now know how to make the right food choices and have a healthy balanced diet. If your weight begins to climb again, go back to phase I.

There are many books and online resources that will tell you more about the South Beach Diet. Just like any type of diet, it is important to consult your doctor first before trying a specific diet. Having a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle will help you lose unwanted fats, stay fit, and live longer.
