Kids Who Injure their ACL Prone to Osteoarthritis

Children who injure their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are likely to develop osteoarthritis early. This is according to the August 28 report at www.medicalnewstoday.com.
The ACL is a ligament in the knee that prevents the lower leg bone from moving forward unexpectedly and helps control. Injury to this part of the body affects a lot of athletes annually and sidelines them for several months while on the road to recovery. But aside from the long months of therapy, the injury can have long term effects such osteoarthritis.
According to the said report, osteoarthritis is, "a degenerative arthritis that causes the breakdown of the cartilage in joints that only worsens over time." But before it even gets worse, doctors at the University of Michigan are working to detect the onset of the condition early on. The use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI and some biochemical techniques are just some of the methods used for the detection of osteoarthritis.
