San Diego - IDEA Health & Fitness Association, the leading membership organization of health and fitness professionals worldwide with more than 22,000 members in over 80 countries, announces the program for the 26th annual IDEA World Fitness Convention™ on July 8-12, with a slate of more than 250 sessions, including 129 sessions debuting this year. The event features the fitness industry's most e xciting new programs, research, and trends as well as in-depth educational presentations and a thought-provoking keynote from best-selling author and motivational speaker John Gray, PhD.

The largest fitness training event in the world, this year's World Fitness Convention will attract more than 5,000 fitness professionals from 60 countries to attend the full program of sessions as well as an industry-leading Fitness and Wellness Expo spotlighting more than 130 exhibitors displaying the latest products and services. “Walkable” cities are beneficial both for the community’s health and the environment. Jim Sallis, Ph.D., FACSM describes an active-friendly city as one that “makes it easy and attractive to be physically active". He said people should be able to walk to shopping areas, restaurants, grocery stores, school, etc. since studies have shown that people are much more likely to be active if activity-frie ndly environments are nearby. He added that people are more likely to opt for walking or cycling if they have aesthetically pleasing and shade-filled outdoor areas.

According to Sallis, "It won't cost more money to build activity-friendly environments; it will just require money to be spent differently. More spending on things like sidewalks and trails that accommodate pedestrians and cyclists should reduce the need to expand the road network."

(NaturalNews) A combination of weight training and aerobic exercise may be more effective than either type of exercise alone in staving off Type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers divided 251 Type-2-diabetes patients between the ages of 39 and 70 who were not regular exercisers before the study began into four groups: one that c
ontinued to do no exercise, one that did 45 minutes of aerobic exercise three times per week, one that did 45 minutes of weight (resistance) training three times per week, and one that did 45 minutes of each type of exercise three times per week (i.e. a total of 4.5 hours of exercise per week).

The participants' A1c values (blood sugar concentration) were measured over the course of two or three months. Participants in the single exercise group demonstrated a decline of approximately 0.5 percentage points, while those in the dual exercise group demonstrated a 0.97 percentage point decline. Those in the control (no exercise) group demonstrated no change in A1c values.

According to lead researcher Ronald J. Sigal, a decrease of 1 percentage point of A1c "translates to a 15 to 20 percent reduction in risk of heart attack or stroke and a 25 to 40 percent reduced risk of other [diabetes-related] complications."

It has long been known that "exercise decreases insulin resistance," Sigal said. "It makes the transport of glucose [blood sugar] more efficient."

But "most other studies have looked at just one kind of exercise, either aerobic or resistance."

It remains unclear how much of the increased blood sugar benefit in the dual exercise group came from the combination of exercises, and how much came from the fact that people in that group were exercising more than the participants in any other group. (- David Gutierrez)

Take the opportunity to get fit and healthy this spring by taking part in the borough’s health walks, run by Richmond Council’s Health Development Team.

The walks are led by a team of award-winning vo
lunteers who provide encouragement and advice and ensure everybody is walking at a pace that is comfortable to them.

Ten new evening and weekend routes, as well as an additional Monday session, have been added to the existing program to give those who work the opportunity to take part.

The walks take place in a variety of venues across the borough, including Richmond and Bushy Parks, and will run throughout spring and summer.

The walks are free and people of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to attend.

Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing, Cllr Denise Carr, said, “This is a marvelous opportunity for residents to get themselves fit and healthy this spring and summer, as well as enjoying the beautiful surroundings of some of the borough’s parks. Our walk leaders do a superb job and will make sure that whatever your level of fitness, you will be walking at a pace that suits you."
