Standing Hamstring Stretch (Leg Stretches)

Leg Stretches: Standing Hamstring Stretch

The hamstrings consist of three muscles:

  • The biceps femoris
  • The semitendinosus
  • The semimembranosus

They help us perform hip extension and knee flexion (bending the knee).

We already wrote about the Prone Hamstring stretch, but you can also stretch this muscle group while standing up. All you will need is a wall (for stability) and a slightly elevated surface (this is not mandatory, you can also perform this stretch with your foot on the floor.

How To: Standing Hamstring Stretch

  • Place your left foot on an elevated surface (chair, bench, stair).
  • Flex your toes towards your face.
  • Keep the right leg slightly bent.
  • As you breathe out, gently hinge from the hips to lean forward.
  • Keep your back straight and your neck relaxed.
  • You should feel a stretch in your left leg (the back of the thighs, around the knee).
  • If you want, you can deepen the stretch and lean in further.
  • Hold for 5-10 seconds.
  • Release and repeat if necessary.
  • Repeat on the other leg.
