The Benefits of Stretching
Regular stretching helps:
- Increase your flexibility
- Reduce the risk of injury from more strenuous exercise
- Relax the body and the mind
The hamstrings are a group of muscles that make up the back of your leg. These muscles are:
- The biceps femoris
- The semitendinosus
- The semimembranosus
Their function is to flex the knee and extend the hip joint.
The hamstrings often get tight after jogging. That’s why runners always have this stretch in their repertoire.
How to Do the Supine Hamstring Stretching
STEP 1: Lie on your back, arms extended and palms facing the floor.
STEP 2: Bend one leg.
STEP 3: Lift the other leg (it doesn’t have to be straight). Hold it gently behind the thigh. Slowly try to bring the leg closer to your face. Breathe and hold for at least 10 seconds (feel free to hold this stretch for up to a minute or even longer if you want).
Strengthen your hamstrings with these exercises: leg curls, front and side lunges, squats.
